Surprise: Henry to Red Bulls

July 14, 2010 — by Sean6

Not a surprise at all of course, but today being the first day MLS teams can act on the designated player rule, they've announced the acquisition of monsieur Henry this morning and stated that he'll play in the friendly against Spurs on July 22nd. No need for too much rest since he didn't see the field in the World Cup (I don't remember him coming on, am I wrong here?) and he tended to ride the pine for Barca last season. Still, Red Bulls are getting a quality striker with a few good years left in him, a fantastic touch and a mind for goal. I just like this guy, even though his ridiculously unsubtle handball during qualifying kept the much more worthy Irish out of the World Cup. Easy with the promises there buddy, there are a lot of hungry young players who will be looking to make a name for

The next big thing: Ganso

July 13, 2010 — by Sean2

Unless you've been following Santos—maybe on the trail of Robinho—you may have so far missed the next great midfield prospect in global footbal: Paulo Henrique aka "Ganso". He's on many a team's radar and there are bound to be offers from both Manchester sides, though Lyon is also in play. Since Brazilians tend to have a hard time settling in England, and Lyon has such a youthful team alongside a fantastic record of bringing in players from overseas and developing them into superstars, it seems like France would be the place to go. Wherever he lands, expect to hear more from him this season.

Golden Ball, Boot, Glove

July 12, 2010 — by Sean4

Anyone who watched Diego Forlan play throughout this tournament has to be happy that he's taking home the Golden Ball for overall best player. He was a major reason why Uruguay went so deep in the Cup, and is really just a pleasure to watch. You could count his poor plays on only one hand, and that's every game combined. His team just needed to send a ball anywhere near him, and even though he was always marked, and would be very quickly double-teamed, he would hold the ball long enough for his side to move into attack. And he almost always made the right decision when running forward with the ball, whether to shoot or distribute to the most dangerous and well-placed runner. I'm watching more Atletico Madrid this season. Golden Boot Big ups to the 20 yr old Golden Boot winner Thomas Mueller for his 5 goals and

Today’s big game! WC2010 Final Open Thread – Netherlands v Spain

July 11, 2010 — by Sean53

Here it is, gentle hippies. The big day! Will Holland come out and attack? Will Spain bore me to sleep with their incessant passing? Will they still be serving breakfast at noon when I get to the bar? All will soon be revealed! Not sure just how much anyone will be attending to this site during the match, and afterward we're all heading to the OkayAfrica festival over at the Prospect Park bandshell, so you're all on your  own. Play nicely!

2010 World Cup Finals Drinking Game

July 10, 2010 — by Sean

Please pick a side. You probably shouldn't follow the rules for both sides, though who are we to tell you what to do? If you haven’t determined which side you’re rooting for by now, flip a coin and if you’re unhappy with the result, change. Fans of Spain We expect you’ll be drinking some form of Spanish wine: if red tempranillo is too heavy, get an albariño. No matter what you decide, make sure to have some sparkling cava on hand. If Spain complete 10 consecutive passes, take a drink. Extra points for each “Olé!” If Spain complete 10 consecutive passes without Xavi touching it along the way, down your glass. If David Villa scores a goal, down your glass. If anyone else from Spain scores, drink two glasses. If Iker Casillas punches the ball, take a drink. If Spain’s possession at halftime is over 65%, finish your drink and

3rd/4th Place Game, Germany v Uruguay: Liveblog/Open Thread

World Cup 1970 3rd/4th Place Game: Uruguay v Germany (Azteca Stadium, Mexico City)
We live up to our chosen moniker--the 3rd/4th place game is quintessential Cult Football.  We will be liveblogging, and we hope you will join us in the comments! For a preview, we can do no better than the Guardian: It's the most pointless match in all football. An anti-climax like no other. A non-event played out by desperately disappointed, and possibly thunderingly depressed, men who know all too well their only chance of immortailty has gone, some kidding on they still care, others failing dismally to hide their displeasure. All the same, it's still the World Cup, this, isn't it. And with 62 matches down, there's only two to go, after which we'll be done for another four years. Sniff! Panic! So let's enjoy it while it lasts, eh? Now then, this is

MVH: Jesus Navas

July 9, 2010 — by AmyChiu

Jesus saves.
In the highly anticipated semifinal game between Germany and Spain, a Euro Cup 2008 championship rematch, a German octopus is the star and Spain's bench becomes my top priority. In case you haven't heard, Paul, a "psychic" octopus from the Sea Life Aquarium in the city of Oberhausen, has correctly called every World Cup game involving the German team thus far.  And before today's game, Paul predicted Spain would be victorious. Way to go, octopus!  Your country wants to make you dinner, but at least you were right... Onto more important things.  Spain's 1-0 victory will put them in the World Cup final against Netherlands on Sunday.  Sooooo, who are we looking at? Carles Puyol? The lone goal scorer of the Germany v Spain game?  I think not.  He's got game, but he's not really a looker.  I think we should take a look
