Super Eagles Suspended from Play for 2 Years

June 30, 2010 — by Sean4

Nigeria were plainly disappointing in World Cup play. Now their president has stepped in to stop all play for the next two years. Ballsy move!

Goodluck Jonathan, the apparently ill-named president of Nigeria, has suspended his country’s national soccer team from international competition for two years after its poor performance in the World Cup in June.

They haven’t won a World Cup match since 1998, and President Jonathan has had enough. Investigations will be held!

No, that is not the president in that picture. Or is it? Advantage: mask

Ha good idea Johnee! Maybe a decree from her Majesty? At least that’d save the Queen (and us) from all the English drama..

But seriously, what happened to the Super Eagles? Remember in ’90s, when the conventional wisdom was that Nigeria would be the African team to break out and challenge for a World Cup? I distinctly remember watching that fantastic group game against Spain in ’98, where they came back from being a goal down *twice* to win–though fact-checking reveals they got destroyed in the Round of 16 that year. And I didn’t remember this: they were one minute away from eliminating eventual champions Italy in 1994!
