Today’s Match Previews

June 29, 2010 — by Sean

Today’s matches to determine the last quarterfinal pairings see the surprisingly pithy Japan up against a Paraguayan side who looked bland against New Zealand in their final group tie. Paraguay did set Italy on their way out of the tournament (and won their group, by the way), so they’re no cream-puffs, and though Man City striker Roque Santa Cruz has seen his mediocre club season follow him into the tournament, he’s still their best shot at unlocking the disciplined Japanese defense.

Anchoring the attack for Japan is the clever Keisuke Honda, whose free kick against Denmark is one of the top strikes of the tournament. His creative play and silky touch will be key in breaking down a Paraguayan side who conceded only one goal in group play.

Spain v Portugal

Portugal is Spain’s “little sister”, both geographically and in footballing quality. The countries share just over 600 miles of border, and have the sort of love-hate relationship most European countries have with their neighbors (disputed territory, resentment over centuries-past monarchal rule—you get the picture).

When it comes to the important stuff—soccer—Spain are completely dominate. Yes Portugal have Christiano Ronaldo, but with him up top alone he tends to go running away from his teammates, and the Portuguese attack becomes more stabbing than probing. The key for them tonight is to make sure their midfield can keep up, specifically Meireles and Tiago, or else they’ll be spending a lot of time on their heels.

Spain, the pre-tournament darlings, have had their stutters but will look to silence critics tonight with a fluid, attacking display. The five at the point of the arrow for Spain (Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, Torres) have amazing quality. They hunt in packs off the ball while their movement can crack the most stubborn defense.
