Spain v Paraguay: Open Thread

July 3, 2010 — by Sean41

Here comes the last game of the quarterfinals, and having seen the results be somewhat unpredictable so far, I’m going to go with what my wife tells me. She’s picked Holland and Germany already, so let’s see what she says…”I don’t know.” Well I guess we’re S.O.L. for this one.

Spain are, well, Spain. Amazing talent. Free flowing football. Danger on the field and off the bench. Paraguay are more of a mystery, mostly because they haven’t been so drooled over by the press. They have a solid center back pairing in Antonio Alcaraz and Paulo da Silva, and of course there’s Santa Cruz up front who’ll be looking to finally put a ball in the net. Not convinced? Check out this little statistical nugget :

Spain has been widely backed to win the World Cup since it won the European Championships in 2008. But that is exactly why it will fail to do so. Winning that continental competition is the kiss of death for World Cup aspirations. Only one European champion has gone on to lift the biggest prize of all – big tournament specialists Germany in 1974, and only then with home advantage.

For those of you hanging around we’ve set up the customary open thread. See you after the bump!

Japan v Paraguay, Round of 16: Liveblog/Open Thread

June 29, 2010 — by Suman14

The Japanese Maradona?

[Final Score: Paraguay 0 – Japan 0; Paraguay advances by winning PK shootout 5-3.

Paraguay advances to a quarterfinal matchup against the winner of Spain-Portugal (the last Round of 16 match, to be played later today at 2:30pm ET). Japan goes home, their hopes of representing Asia further in the tournament dashed.]

This is by far the most unexpected matchup of the Round of 16, with neither country having advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Cup before. Paraguay will be attempting to make the quarterfinals 50% South American (!), with Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil having already advanced over the past 3 days. On the other hand, Japan is trying to become the first Asian side to advance to the quarterfinals since South Korea in 2002.

We’ll again be sporadically liveblogging–we will post scoring plays, details about individual players, and observations about the general run of play. We’ll count on you to provide color via the comments!

We are about 15 minutes from kickoff! Starting lineups and a very welcoming and empty comment box after the jump!

Today’s Match Previews

June 29, 2010 — by Sean

Today’s matches to determine the last quarterfinal pairings see the surprisingly pithy Japan up against a Paraguayan side who looked bland against New Zealand in their final group tie. Paraguay did set Italy on their way out of the tournament (and won their group, by the way), so they’re no cream-puffs, and though Man City striker Roque Santa Cruz has seen his mediocre club season follow him into the tournament, he’s still their best shot at unlocking the disciplined Japanese defense.

Anchoring the attack for Japan is the clever Keisuke Honda, whose free kick against Denmark is one of the top strikes of the tournament. His creative play and silky touch will be key in breaking down a Paraguayan side who conceded only one goal in group play.

Notes on Slovakia-Paraguay

June 20, 2010 — by Suman

We’re not liveblogging this one, as the game is already in the 29th minute, and in fact Paraguay just scored to go up 1-0.  But we’ll use our liveblogging format nevertheless for some notes and observations about the match–probably mostly about the Paraguayan side, as we’re guessing they’re the more likely to advance out of the group.

Starting lineups below, and notes after the jump…

Slovakia: Jan Mucha, Peter Pekarik, Martin Skrtel, Zdeno Strba, Vladimir Weiss, Jan Kozak, Stanislav Sestak, Robert Vittek, Jan Durica, Marek Hamsik, Kornel Salata.

Paraguay: Justo Villar, Claudio Morel, Carlos Bonet, Roque Santa Cruz, Enrique Vera, Paulo Da Silva, Victor Caceres, Cristian Riveros, Nelson Valdez, Lucas Barrios, Antolin Alcaraz.

Dispatch from South Africa: Well that was a wet one…

June 14, 2010 — by Larry1

Sometimes seats above the roofline are a good thing.  But, first, let’s rewind a bit.  Winter found its rhythm today, managing sun, wind, rain, and hail, rotated nicely about every hour til the sun went down.  The other three left him behind without missing a beat.

Visited the & Union for the Netherlands v Denmark match.  It’s the brewpub of sorts for a South African craft brewer, but, strangely, their product is actually brewed in Germany according to their bottles.  Both the Amber and Dark Lagers were perfectly drinkable, yet lacked depth, leading to quick finishes.  Sadly, in a bid to maintain some sort of sanity and coherence, I had to cut back, and those were the only beers tried.

Liveblogging Italy v Paraguay

June 14, 2010 — by Sean2

Big excitement for us here today, as we don’t have to travel far to be in the heart of Italian Brooklyn (only as far as my couch, in fact). We’re eating cannolis and drinking Moretti, and we’ve got a pot of  marinara on the stove to dip our bread in.

Let’s see how the old men of Italy perform. They tend to start off slowly in these tournaments.

Follow us live after the bump! (We expect auto-refreshing today, so you shouldn’t have to keep reloading the page to get updates. Let us know if it isn’t working …)
