What to Watch This Weekend (Oct 30-31)

We’re back once again with our recommendations on when exactly you should plant yourself on your couch or local pub stool this weekend. Again using SoccerInsider’s full TV listing as a reference, here we go, with some notes from various members of the CultFootball collective:

Saturday Oct 30

van der vaart — Striker, Goal Scorer, Contortionist

Manchester United-Spurs 12:30 p.m. FSC: a matchup of the 3rd and 5th place teams in the EPL table, with goal-scoring players in form on both sides (Chicharito and Nani for Man U, Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart for Spurs)

Barcelona-Sevilla 4 p.m. ESPN Deportes: One of the more challenging La Liga games for Barca, especially since Sevilla seems to finally coming into form (6th in the table) after a slow start, and their Brazilian WC2010 star Luis Fabiano back in the lineup and finding the back of the net.

Those are the two matches to make time for, but if you need a couple additional matches to fill out your day:

Hercules-Real Madrid 2 p.m. GolTV: It’ll be interesting to see if Real Madrid can keep up their recent dominating form (well, last week’s scoreless draw against 3rd division Murcia in a Copa del Rey game excepted), or conversely whether Hércules can pull off another upset.

AC Milan-Juventus 2:30 p.m. FSC: AC Milan is 2nd in the Serie A table, and has an exciting set of big names in attack: Ronaldhino, Pato, Robinho, Ibrahimovic, Seedorf, while Juve is in 5th. See Goal.com’s rundown of key individual matchups here.

And since the MLS playoffs have started, a Saturday night special…

San Jose-New York 10 p.m. Telefutura: Sounds like Thierry Henry will miss this match due to an injury, but the Red Bulls have a number of players to watch: Rafa Marquez, the Mexican international recently arrived from Barcelona; Estonian Joel Lindpere; Jamaican Dane Richards; and Senegalese-American goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul (see this NY Daily News article about his journey from Senegal to the Bronx to high school in Manhattan, and eventually to the MLS).

Sunday Oct 31

Palermo-Lazio 7:30 a.m. FSP: Roman side Lazio sits atop Serie A, while Palermo is in 8th. We’ll refer you to Goal.com for each side‘s rosters, recent team news, and standard formations.

cummins — Stan Cummins (sunderland) 1980's tyne-wear derby

Newcastle-Sunderland 9:30 a.m. FSP: The Tyne-Wear derby. Overlooked step-sister Sunderland have held their own against Newcastle on the pitch over the years, if not in international fame. Always good to share your name with a tasty brew.

Bolton-Liverpool noon FSC: Liverpool played well last week, and Fernando Torres finally scored, so it’ll be interesting to see if they can build on that—and work their way up in the table.

And one more—another MLS playoff game, featuring the star-studded Galaxy:

We got some good feedback after posting to Facebook Pirlo’s cracker v Parma from this past weekend. Here is the video clip of goal–plus three others that are early contenders for goal of the season:

Also from last weekend, Brazilian Alex’s unbelievable free kick, which put Chelsea up 2-0 over Arsenal:

Here is Nani’s spectacular individual effort vs –#2 in the following, to Tevez’s similar strike against Chelsea, but I think Nani’s is clearly the better goal:

And finally, Berbatov’s spectacular individual effort against Liverpool on Sept 18 (assisted by Nani, btw)–the 2nd goal of Berbatov’s hat trick in Man U’s 3-2 victory that day, #1 in the following:

Random pregame thoughts on today’s Champions League matches

Didier Deschamps - Glory Days — Didier Deschamps - Sporting Hero

Will Real Marid be able to score away from home? Will all the talk and camera time get monopolized by Mourinho, or will Marseilles manager Didier Deschamps also get a bit of attention?

Will Arsenal rebound from their debacle Saturday? Will Lukasz Fabianski prove any more capable than the injured Almunia?

Will Martin Stekelenburg do as well (or even better) against AC Milan’s, compared with his stellar albeit losing performance against Ronaldo, Higauin, Ozil et al two weeks ago? Will he get any help from Luis Suarez if the need arises?

What to Watch This Weekend (Sept 11-12)

We’re finally launching what will be a weekly feature (aimed at our US readers): a guide to the televised matches you’ll want to schedule your weekend around. With the plethora of leagues (Prem, Champion, Bundes, La Liga, Serie A, etc.) and channels (FSC, FSE, ESPN/2/3, GolTV)*, plus all the time zone and tape delay issues–and it can be no small task to figure out when and where to watch (or record) the most relevant game(s) of the coming weekend. Our plan is to do that task for you.

WaPo’s SoccerInsider usefully compiles and posts a full listing of televised matches for the coming weekend; see here for this weekend’s edition. But nothing really jumps out of that long list as must-see TV.

Indeed, I checked in with the CultFootball brain trust and got feedback from Coach Larry:

There isn’t much to watch this weekend in terms of known quality playing each other. I am hesitant to highlight an internet-only broadcast and I especially don’t like ever recommending a match being shown on tape.

Having said all that, the best pure matchup is Bilbao v Atletico Madrid, unless you guys have an insight into the Mexican league. If forced to watch one of the “big” teams play, I’d lean toward either the Gelled One returning for Real, or Arsenal hosting Bolton (true live and most accessible).

AC Milan’s New Strikeforce

With the signing of Robinho and Ibrahimavic to put alongside Ronaldinho and Pato, AC Milan have created the most impressive forward line in Serie A. Some will say that Robinho is too temperamental to play in Europe and should stay at home in Brazil. People will talk about how Ronaldinho is fat, slow, and old. Others will suggest that with so many creative sorts, there won’t be a willingness to win ugly, a necessity when facing physical, defensive minded teams.

I grew up watching Milan on the RAI Sunday morning feed on a local broadcast. Back then they had the magical Dutch trio of van Basten, Gullit, and Rijkaard, and though the broadcast was entirely in Italian, I could still pick out their names when the commentator mentioned them (they tended to stick out on the field, too). Milan have had some great teams over the years, but never have they had such a combination of attacking talent as they had then. But maybe now, with this trio of Brazilians alongside a lanky Swede with a sense for the fantastic, they may just create the sort of wonderful attacking style the rossoneri haven’t seen in years, and may just create a ripple in the power balance of European club football.

AC Milan v Panathinaikos? In the Pontiac Silverdome? On grass?

Doesn’t it seem like every club in Europe is somewhere in the United States over these few weeks, playing warmup matches and making odd publicity appearances? Thierry Henry scoring on Spurs yet again, but this time after “Coming to America” (really MSG?), making a memorable appearance on NY1, and taking the lovely PATH train from Manhattan to Harrison NJ; Sir Alex eating ribs while competing with a gospel choir in Kansas City; Cristian Ronaldo lecturing at UCLA (hat tip for that link to faculty member Steve Lee (although some are pushing him to try out for goalkeer on the 2014 South Korean squad–Be the Reds Steve–literally!)); and hapless Portsmouth on the pre-season tour from hell.
