Asamoah Gyan Dances at Stamford Bridge–and So Does Bolo Zenden

November 15, 2010 — by Suman2

Asamoah Gyan's School of Dance

Up until a couple weeks ago, it seemed as if Chelsea were going to run away with the Premier League title (even the Special One chimed in all the way from Madrid to that effect!), as they rolled through the first 10 games of the season: 8 wins (a few of them blowouts), a draw, and a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Man City.  Then came a surprising 2-0 loss to Liverpool.  Perhaps that could be explained away: the game was away at Anfield Park, Liverpool is actually a “big club” (according to tradition if not the current table), and Fernando Torres suddenly rediscovered his scoring touch.  But after yesterday’s shocking result–a 3-0 loss at home to Sunderland!–Chelsea no longer looks invincible, and we have at least a 3-horse race for the title.

Sunderland had performed doggedly but modestly through their first 9 games–2 wins, 1 loss…and 6 ties.  Then came an embarrassing 5-1 loss against their rivals Newcastle.  That’s the kind of loss that can derail a season–but they bounced back with a win against Stoke City and a draw against Spurs last week.  Still, no one expected them to go into Stamford Bridge and dominate the mighty Blues.

An odd Sunderland stat: all of their mere 10 goals in the 12 games prior to yesterday had been scored by only 2 players: Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan.  But that changed yesterday, as Nedum Onuoha waltzed through the Chelsea defense to score first for Sunderland, and Danny Welbeck finished nicely for their third. (Onuoha, incidentally, is a 24-year-old defender, born in Nigeria and raised in Manchester, on loan to Sunderland from Man City. Welbeck is a 20-year-old winger/striker, born in England to Ghanaian parents, on loan from Man Utd. Both have appeared for England’s U21 team–we may see them in the future for the senior squad.)

But in between those two goals, Gyan got his fourth goal in the past three games–he’d scored all of Sunderland’s goals in their games against Stoke and Spurs.  (In fact, these have been the first three starts of Gyan’s nascent Premier League career, as Bent had been starting ahead of him until he went down with an injury.  It’ll be interesting to see if Sunderland manager Steve Bruce finds a way to get them both on the field from the beginning, once Bent recovers.)

And so Gyan did his dance at Stamford Bridge–a dance we may be seeing in England with some regularity in the future, if Gyan can keep up this sort of finishing.  See all three goals here:

Champions League Matchday 4 Video Highlights: Madrid-Milan, Spurs-Inter, Arsenal-Шахтар

November 4, 2010 — by Suman

In case you missed the this week’s Champions League action, here are highlights from three of this week’s 16 matches:

Tottenham Hotspur 3, Inter Milan 1: In the performance of the week, which has made him the talk of European football, 21-year old Welshman Gareth Bale led Spurs to a big victory at home over defending champion Inter.  Though he wasn’t involved in Spurs’ first goal (Modric feeding van der Vaart for that one), he singlehandedly created the latter two by streaking down the left wing and feeding perfect, nearly identical low crosses right into the path of the goalscorer (Peter Crouch for the 2nd, Pavylyuchenko for the 3rd (that after Samuel Eto’o had pulled Inter back to 2-1 with a suberb finish).

Here is the Guardian’s “as it happened” commentary on the last goal, to read along as you watch:

GOAL! Spurs 3-1 Inter (Pavlyuchenko 89′) That is just outlandish from Bale! He received the ball around the half-way line and simply belted it 20 yards beyond Maicon and set off after it. He got there first and, best of all, played the perfect pass across the face of goal, inviting Pavlyuchenko to smash it simply past the keeper. Bale has blown Inter away tonight.

Yet More Champions League Fixtures! Matchday 4.2

November 3, 2010 — by Suman

With yesterday's first eight games of this Matchday completed (Matchday 4.1, if you will)--highlighted by Spurs demolishing defending champion FC Internazionale Milano by a score of 3-1 (which in turn was highlighted by young Welshman Gareth Bale "terrorizing" Inter with his streaks down the left side of the pitch)--we move on to Matchday 4.2. Eight more matches later today! We'll be gathering at CultFootball headquarters to watch Real Madrid playing Associazione Calcio Milan in the San Siro (though I'll also be lobbying for live look-ins on Arsenal playing FC Шахтар Донецьк in the fancy new Донбас Арена--which will host a number of Euro 2012 games, including it seems one quarterfinal match and one semifinal match).

Champions League Matchday 4 Underway! Get Your Fixtures Fix Here

November 2, 2010 — by Suman2

Matchday 4 - Tues Nov 2 & Wed Nov 3

UEFA Champions League Matchday 4 has already started, with Panathinaikos v Rubin Kazan already underway in distant Kazan (Russia), then 7 more matches later today, and 8 more tomorrow.  With the first 3 Matchdays completed (on September 14-15, September 28-29, and October 19-20, respectively), we’re now at the halfway point of the Group Stage, i.e., halfway thru the home-and-away round robin schedule within each of the 8 groups, with every team having already played the 3 other teams within its group over the course of those first 3 Matchdays. Now they turn around and play each other again, but at the other location. (For example, Barcelona hosted Panathinaikos on Matchday 1, played at Rubin Kazan on Matchday 2, and hosted København on Matchday 3. For Matchdays 4, 5, and 6, they play at København, play at Panathinaikos, and host Rubin Kazan.)

Without further combinatorial ado, here are the fixtures for today and tomorrow, pulled directly from UEFA.com (luckily copying-&-pasting is a link-preserving operation, so you can click thru below to UEFA’s group, team and match pages!  Very handy for checking group standings; lineups once matches are underway, and results once they’re finished.)
