Open Thread: USA v ALG / ENG v SLV

June 23, 2010 — by Suman13

Sixty minutes til kickoffs..the floor is yours.  Something after the jump to get the conversation started..

We’ll once again bite from NYT’s Goal blog’s liveblogger on duty:

The U.S.-Algeria game is the first-ever meeting between these two countries, and it could hardly be more momentous. An American win puts the United States through to the knockout phase and the Algerians out of the tournament. But an Algerian win gives the Greens a good chance of reaching the knockout phase, while the Americans would go out. And if it ends in a draw, well, don’t even start.

I can’t help but believe that this match will hinge on one particular matchup: Landon Donovan, the Yanks’ relentless playmaking machine, vs. Nadir Belhadj, the fast left wingman who makes things happen for Algeria. They may be going head to head for much of the game, and it might look (and sound) like this:

Where are people watching these games? I’m about to walk down the block and up the street to Scopello. Though may shift a bit further up the block to Mullane’s, since they’ve got multiple screens–for simultaneous viewing

Damnit that was a good goal by Dempsey. I’m with Harkes, we keep not getting the calls, though not a conspiracy, we just need some luck with some of these calls.

Like the first half v Slovenia, Altidore has cement feet. Hope he responds the same way in the 2nd half this game.

Lets see if Feilharber can make a difference in the MF and Clint can get something done up top. But another problem in the backline.

Wow amazing unbelievable. No one other than Donovan finishes that. And as Simon pointed out on fb, it was our other world-class player who started that attack–Howard with the long throw.

Just enough time to shower and head back out to meet Mahoney at Der Schwarze Kolner for Germany-Ghana..yes, it is run by a black guy from Koln.
