Today’s big game! WC2010 Final Open Thread – Netherlands v Spain

July 11, 2010 — by Sean53

Here it is, gentle hippies. The big day! Will Holland come out and attack? Will Spain bore me to sleep with their incessant passing? Will they still be serving breakfast at noon when I get to the bar? All will soon be revealed!

Not sure just how much anyone will be attending to this site during the match, and afterward we’re all heading to the OkayAfrica festival over at the Prospect Park bandshell, so you’re all on your  own. Play nicely!

Also, we are having some people over for the game, and so although I’ll be playing the host (we’ve got jamon serrano, a queso Catalan, and some sangria made with a Spanish grenache; and to oppose all that, bottles of Heineken & Amstel Light, and a good amount of Gouda–no wooden shoes however), I do have the laptop open..so let’s see if anyone else is watching with their laptops or smartphones tuned to CultFootball…

Starting lineups pulled from http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/jul/11/holland-spain-world-cup-final-live :

Spain, much as expected too, with no Fernando Torres: Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Pique, Puyol, Capdevila, Busquets, Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta, Pedro, Villa.
Subs: Valdes, Albiol, Marchena, Torres, Fabregas, Mata, Arbeloa, Llorente, Javi Martinez, Silva, Jesus Navas, Reina.

Holland, much as expected – and lining up 1 to 11, a World Cup final first: Stekelenburg, Van Der Wiel, Heitinga, Mathijsen, Van Bronckhorst, Van Bommel, De Jong, Sneijder, Robben, Kuyt, van Persie.
Subs: Vorm, Boulahrouz, Ooijer, De Zeeuw, Braafheid, Elia, Schaars, Babel, Afellay, Huntelaar, Van der Vaart, Boschker.

The referee: Do we need to tell you? It’s England’s Howard Webb, from Britain’s England.

Spain looks a little shaky in the back though they’re otherwise controlling play

My guest (HS teammate, Dutch by marriage) thinks the game got turned down a notch after that yellow to Puyol for the tackle on Robben. He also thinks Robben was *not* acting on that one. And now van Bommel does one of his reckless tackles, on Iniesta..hope this isn’t the tone for long..

    July 11, 2010 at 2:53 PM

And now another yellow! Ramos for that slide on Kuyt..

That could (should?) have been a red card for De Jong with that karate kick into Xabi’s chest..

The Dutch are butchers. Same game plan they used v Brazil. Worked then; will it work again?

  • antu

    July 11, 2010 at 3:34 PM

    should

  • Tommy

    July 11, 2010 at 3:42 PM

I’m thinking Spain are tougher than the oranje and will break thru.

  • Suman

    July 11, 2010 at 3:54 PM

Robben had his chance! A little chip would’ve worked nicely..but credit to Casillas, he got just the outside of his foot on it..

    July 11, 2010 at 3:55 PM

    agreed Tommy

Hey all juggling kids and game has left me unable till now. De joeng is lucky to be in the game after the kung Fu kick, and way too many cards overall. Robben blew that opportunity a few minutes ago. And I would have liked to have seen Pedro come out for that tall target striker for Spain and move David villa back onto the left flank

  • Suman

    July 11, 2010 at 3:57 PM

Oof! and Villa misses his chance! fearful symmetry..

  • Suman

    July 11, 2010 at 3:58 PM

Elia in..for Kuyt?? interesting..and will we see Torres soon?

  • Simon

    July 11, 2010 at 4:00 PM

Don’t think well see Torres unless we go to extra time so that he would be available for pk’s

  • antu

    July 11, 2010 at 4:04 PM

thought that was it for Ramos

  • Harris

    July 11, 2010 at 4:04 PM

Man..how can Ramos miss that? Spain definitely dominating now.

  • Tommy

    July 11, 2010 at 4:05 PM

Puyol would have hit that header in. Ramos will regret that.

  • Simon

    July 11, 2010 at 4:05 PM

Oh Sergio Ramos is going to be havin nightmares about that one if Spain loses

  • Simon

    July 11, 2010 at 4:07 PM

With ten to play both squads have two subs left correct?

  • Suman

    July 11, 2010 at 4:12 PM

That’s right, both teams have 2 subs left..saving them for extra time?

  • Suman

    July 11, 2010 at 4:13 PM

Robben will be having nightmares about those *two* breakaways that Casillas stymied him on..

  • Suman

    July 11, 2010 at 4:14 PM

Ok, 2nd sub for Spain: Fabregas in for Xabi Alonso..

  • Simon

    July 11, 2010 at 4:15 PM

Looks like fabregas is charged with helping the d for the last 5 minutes and extra time if necessary

  • Suman

    July 11, 2010 at 4:18 PM

Who else does van Marwijk consider bringing in? Van der Vaart for Van Persie (who will be pissed if so)? Affelay for pace?

  • Harris

    July 11, 2010 at 4:19 PM

If Robben would quit crying, maybe he’d actually get one those through balls….as much as I love his play, ..he needs to sort his game out !

  • Suman

    July 11, 2010 at 4:28 PM

yeah too much complaining from Robben! but to his credit he has been running his ass off up that right wing..

  • Tommy

    July 11, 2010 at 4:28 PM

I’d try to bring on Forlan. That dude is lethal.

  • Simon

    July 11, 2010 at 4:29 PM

I hope someone can get a goal in extra time I DO NOT want to see PK’s

  • Tommy

    July 11, 2010 at 4:32 PM

    Robben is gassed

  • Suman

    July 11, 2010 at 4:32 PM

Another breakaway! this time it’s Fabregas getting stuffed..and the nat the other end–if only Robben had a right foot..

  • Suman

    July 11, 2010 at 4:33 PM

seems like both teams have expended too much energy over the past 100 minutes, esp with all the tracking and tackling..does anyone have enough left in the tank for a finish??

  • Tommy

    July 11, 2010 at 4:37 PM

I’m very happy the fouls have trailed off

  • Simon

    July 11, 2010 at 4:38 PM

One missed tackle for either side as a resul of fatihue could result in the cup winner I’m amazed robben still has so mug pace this late in the match

  • Suman

    July 11, 2010 at 4:44 PM

Torres on for Villa! Villa can’t be happy about that..

  • Simon

    July 11, 2010 at 4:45 PM

VERY SURPRISED Torres for Villa. Would have subbed Pedro (is he still on) and putt villa on the flank

  • Suman

    July 11, 2010 at 4:49 PM

Heitinga gone! 2nd yellow for him right? looked like a dive from Iniesta..

  • Simon

    July 11, 2010 at 4:52 PM

Dutch down to 10. Maybe a good foul, maybe a bad card not sure. Can Spain capitalize before pk’s?

  • Simon

    July 11, 2010 at 4:53 PM

Robben lucky not to get his second yellow there

  • Tommy

    July 11, 2010 at 4:55 PM

It was a legit foul and card for impeding as he’s into the box. The fall was acting.

  • Harris

    July 11, 2010 at 4:55 PM

Honestly, I wish the ref had given out 1 red to each team in the first half. Would have made for a prettier second half.

  • Tommy

    July 11, 2010 at 4:57 PM

    Iniesta!

  • Suman

    July 11, 2010 at 4:58 PM

Iniesta! and that after the Dutch had been on attack with 10 men..ok ~5 mins left, Dutch will throw everyone fwd..

  • Simon

    July 11, 2010 at 4:59 PM

Starts with a great service by Torres and wonderful finish by Iniesta!!!!!
