Ghana v Uruguay: Liveblog/Open Thread

July 2, 2010 — by Sean52

We’re all over the place today what with the holiday weekend upon us, so let’s just get straight to the point:

Uruguay: Muslera, Maxi Pereira, Lugano, Victorino, Fucile, Alvaro Fernandez, Perez, Arevalo Rios, Cavani, Suarez, Forlan
Ghana: Kingson, Pantsil, Vorsah, John Mensah, Sarpei, Annan, Inkoom, Asamoah, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Muntari, Gyan

Danger up front for Uruguay, who can turn to a brutal, hacking style of defense if Ghana start to turn the screw. The Black Stars have power and speed in abundance, but will they hold their shape?

The comment thread is open after the bump!

All the experts seem to be on Uruguay, including the betting markets. 90 min result is 10/11 to Uruguay, 10/3 on Ghana, and the draw is 23/10. Not sure who of quality URU has actually beat in this tourney. I think the 84000 people cheering for Ghana might prove influential. Ghana makes it in a high scoring match, as both defenses struggle.

Suarez vs. Gyan in my book – let’s see who’s more on their game tonight?!!

John Harkes is an idiot. There. I said it. That ball from Forlan just too heavy, ruining the best chance so far.

so far Suarez. Ghana barely possessing the ball. They need a spark before the spend the entire match in their own penalty area.

kingson is the man! and thank god because ghana just is not there! their d as nonexistent as their mid and offense! here’s a thought: african players go to europe and excel tremendously. they play together as a country, and have no real style WITH a european coach! what gives????

6 corners in 30 mins for Uru. and Gha almost gets that spark with their first. maybe that will settle them some.

NOW ghana is playing with a style, using their midfield, support triangles, attacking with all strikers…..their look dangerous, confident and ready to win now!!!

    July 2, 2010 at 3:28 PM

I thought he took that from Ligocki

  • Ligocki

    July 2, 2010 at 3:29 PM

Tough one for the keeper – screened with an wicked bend . . . Your shot, my friend, was a sniper strike – pure awesomeness. Question is – what goal dance did you do??

  • Ligocki

    July 2, 2010 at 3:35 PM

Let’s see if Ghana can continue to positive momentum . . .

  • Larry

    July 2, 2010 at 3:38 PM

    July 2, 2010 at 3:45 PM

    Great strike!!! Game on!!!

  • Tommy

    July 2, 2010 at 3:52 PM

    Antu, that’s enough from you.

Gock, I did no dance – only shouted “You can’t give me that shot!”, as if I routinely struck 40 yd left-footers into the upper 90. It was you who did the dance. Remember showing “the arrow” and airplane buzzing their bench? Pure class.

URU only has 1 sub left, GHA all 3. Could impact if we get extra time.

  • Larry

    July 2, 2010 at 3:57 PM

How did muntari miss the goal from there? Not concentrating on Boateng’s appeal for a pk.

  • Ligocki

    July 2, 2010 at 3:59 PM

Tommy – please respect my denial and repression of the behaviors to which you refer . . . What does it mean if pride does not self-correct?

Defense is generally lacking, but this is immensely entertaining play. Let’s give them another 45.

Hope Ghana ends the 2nd half like the first

  • Larry

    July 2, 2010 at 4:48 PM

Ghana’s crossing has not been strong in this extra time. Neither team working that hard to make a chance.

oooommmmmmggggg!! woooow!! that ball was in the net anyway that suarez handed! but not that it matters! why didn’t gyan just take his time and approach the pk with poise?! i wonder if it will affect him in the shootout now??

  • Sean

    July 2, 2010 at 5:06 PM

Totally not in the net. Suarez can tend the line as well as he can score over it!

  • clara

    July 2, 2010 at 5:06 PM
