The pre-game conventional wisdom had the Brazilians walking all over the largely unknown North Koreans (remarkably 20 of the 23 players on the North Korean squad play for domestic North Korean club teams). But North Korea held the heralded Brazilians to a scoreless draw well into the 2nd half, until Brazil’s quality showed through. In particular, Maicon–who with his combination of speed, size, strength, and skill is perhaps unlike any overlapping defender the game has seen–scored a must-see goal on a fantastic daring solo effort, and then Brazil went up 2-0 on a nice piece of teamwork. To their credit, North Korea did not give up, and got on the board with a late goal.
