Dispatches

The last few days, June 27-29

[Editor’s note: This is the final installment in Coach Larry’s account of his trip to South Africa for WC2010.  See his previous SA dispatches here.]

Victoria Market - Durban, South Africa

Poor weather drives us away from the beachfront and up to Umhlanga to the mall for some shopping in the largest mall in the Southern Hemisphere.  Disappointingly, I cannot locate the indoor roller coaster, though it does feature a climbing wall and a goodly number of surf shops.  Over and after lunch we see the surprisingly entertaining Germans roll through the English as if every English defender has lost all sense of position.  The evening match and dinner prove not much more exciting, though it does horrifyingly display more inept refereeing.  Alas, we have worse ideas than an early bedtime, as tomorrow brings us Netherlands v Slovakia.

We make an early trip to Victoria Market, acquiring a mish-mash of souvenirs after walking well past the structure, getting a bit lost in the day market.  At least I have some peri-peri spice for the World Cup Final party back home (fyi, it was pretty good).  A quick beer over at Wilson’s Wharf gets us off our feet, but we return our treasures home to head to the match.  Back down the hill we walk.  We barely make it past the top of Florida Road before we start mixing with head-to-toe Orange clad Dutch fans.  The two miles go quickly as we continue to pick up jumpsuits, admiral outfits, curly wigs, and cow hats.  There was even an Houston Dynamo (Holden) kit thrown into the mix.  As the extreme wind nearly carries away my pre-match beer, I worry the action might get affected.

Liveblog/open thread: Netherlands vs Slovakia

"I'm going to score down there"

[Final score: Netherlands 2 – 1 Slovakia (Robben 17′, Sneijder 84′; Vittek 93′)

The Dutch advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1998. They will face the winner of this afternoon’s Brazil-Chile match.]

The 2nd half of the Round of 16 begins this morning with the Netherlands taking on surprising Slovakia.  The Netherlands are heavily favored to win this matchup.  They came into the tournament as a dark horse to go all the way, and they didn’t disappoint (unlike some other European sides) in winning all three of their games in Group E.

Slovakia, on the other hand, shocked the world by eliminating Italy and advancing in 2nd place out of Group F.  They’ll be attempting to pull off another upset in Durban today.

Starting lineups, players to watch, live entries and your comments, all after the jump!

Watch #NED v #SVK at @iplaybeautiful!

June 28, 2010 — by Suman

We’re back with another freebie–two reservations to watch this morning’s Netherlands-Slovakia match at the PlayBeautiful NYC pop-up virtual stadium on Mulberry Street in Nolita NYC (@iplaybeautiful on twitter)

As we mentioned in our previous giveaway, we experienced PlayBeautiful for Portugal-Brazil on Friday, and it’s an awesome place to watch a game–stadium seating for 100 in front of a huge projection TV image; concession stands serving coffee, tea, beer, snacks; and even a little patch of astroturf with 2 small goals (back room).  There was a good turnout of Brazilians on Friday–we imagine this morning it will be the Oranje faithful who turn out!

Let us know if you’re in NYC and can use these reservations (or spread the word to your friends who can)–we will email you the pdfs!

We were hoping to liveblog from PlayBeautiful this morning, but looks like we’ll be staying in Brooklyn for this match.  We also have reservations for ESP-POR tomorrow afternoon, so look for us to be reporting live from Mulberry St for that match!

Notes on Slovakia-Paraguay

June 20, 2010 — by Suman

We’re not liveblogging this one, as the game is already in the 29th minute, and in fact Paraguay just scored to go up 1-0.  But we’ll use our liveblogging format nevertheless for some notes and observations about the match–probably mostly about the Paraguayan side, as we’re guessing they’re the more likely to advance out of the group.

Starting lineups below, and notes after the jump…

Slovakia: Jan Mucha, Peter Pekarik, Martin Skrtel, Zdeno Strba, Vladimir Weiss, Jan Kozak, Stanislav Sestak, Robert Vittek, Jan Durica, Marek Hamsik, Kornel Salata.

Paraguay: Justo Villar, Claudio Morel, Carlos Bonet, Roque Santa Cruz, Enrique Vera, Paulo Da Silva, Victor Caceres, Cristian Riveros, Nelson Valdez, Lucas Barrios, Antolin Alcaraz.
